Fairview Exhibit 2022-23 / South and West Walls

This portfolio of 12 photographs was displayed on the two walls facing south (near the copier) and above the wall facing west (behind the copier) at the Calvert County Library Fairview Branch. Local photos include a Patuxent River view and one from the farm at American Chestnut Land Trust. The exhibit ran from November 4, 2022 through January 27, 2023.

Walk Over Reality

We visited the unique circular roof observatory of the ARoS Museum, providing a view of Aarhus through a kaleidoscope of colors. I focused on two women walking in the “lime” zone of the observatory; one sitting below them. Note the blue, purple & red view zones in the background. Color Wheel

While driving around Whitehead in Northern Ireland we decided to check out the waterfront. We were not expecting such a “Wheel of Color” as seen on these brightly painted homes starting with the purple one at #19 Marine Parade. Color coordination with your neighbors is paramount! What’s Behind The Door II

While in Copenhagen, we discovered a courtyard leading to the church rectory. My first photo, shot behind my wife, showed her viewing the door. This second photo was staged to give it an eerie, fore-boding feel. The Question: Would you the viewer dare traverse the courtyard & open the door? Graven 2

Our stop in Aarhus, Denmark allowed for a walking tour close to the cruise terminal. The exposed structural timbers on the aged red building on the left is a fine example of centuries-old Danish construction. Show Of Hands

This creepy image of hands reaching for help was shot at the Buddhist Wat Rong Khun (White) Temple southwest of Chiang Rai. Note the robotic hand in the lower left quadrant. Temple construction, still ongoing, is funded by Chalermchai Kositpipat; a temblor damaged it in 2014, a year after our visit. Praying Goddess

A somewhat adventurous water taxi ride across the Chao Phraya river delivered us to the massive and ornate Wat Arun Hindu temple. We were “treated” to a near vertical climb up the side of the main tower, termed a “prahng”. Thankfully, I shot this image of the praying goddess before our climb. Jarlsberg The Gull

Walking along the Chesapeake Beach Railway Trail, I observed this gull sitting on a piling near Abner’s Marina, waiting for a meal to swim by. My 500 mm lens’ shallow depth of field allowed me to blur the crab traps in the background while preserving their color and achieving sharp focus of the eye and beak. Patuxent Skies

This view is looking north from the Ferry Landing Woods private pier. Directly across from the Merkle Wildlife Area, it provides a vantage point to view eagles and ospreys soaring above with fish jumping below. Maple Silhouette

A visit to the Greensboro Botanical Gardens in the late fall of 2021 provided us an opportunity to view many trees that were showing off their fall colors. I decided to make a silhouette of this maple branch to emphasize the shapes, removing the background clutter of the other trees’ branches and leaves. Butterfly & Moth Meet

Fine examples of a Silver Spotted Skipper & Eastern Tiger Swallowtail gather nectar from a cone flower. The American Chestnut Land Trust manages a preserve of over 3,000 acres including the Double Oak Farm. Flowers produced on the farm, including those shown, are grown by volunteers. Shapes of Iron

Our self-directed walking tour of Asheville included visits to the River Arts District shops. Adjacent to the Wedge Studios, on Roberts Street, there is an extensive iron sculpture that serves as a fence. This image captures a small interesting section of this sculpture constructed from scrap iron shapes. Yellow Mounds

The mustard color of the Yellow Mounds come from the mineral Goethite. These layers were formed over 65 million years. This image represents my effort to capture 5 bands: (1) Foreground grasses, (2) sage & green grassland, (3) mustard mounds, (4) sand-colored ridgeline and (5) blue cirrus sky.
