This suite of photographs was displayed on the mid-south wall (facing Chaneyville Road) and nearby center column at the Calvert Library Fairview Branch. This exhibit ran from August 2, 2024 through November 1, 2024.

'Squirrel Point Beacon' The Squirrel Point Light sits on the Kennebec River in Maine. It dates back to 1901 and was fully automated in 1979. Still fully operational, it is maintained by the US Coast Guard. 'Groovy Skyscrapers' The parent photo of these two adjoining Temple U. Morgan Hall art deco buildings was shot from their central courtyard. It provided a base image for the application of Photoshop’s myriad filters including the TWIRL. 'Forest Ferns' Our walk on a trail at Ecola State Park revealed a lush Oregon rainforest of sitka spruce, douglas fir, sword ferns and lodgepole pine. My shot of the fern-rich forest floor and moss-covered trees, printed on metallic paper, emphasizes the flowing detail of the fronds contrasted to the vertical trees. / Locale & Date: Ecola State Park, 13 Sep 2019 / Cannon Beach, Oregon

'Dolls on Nevsky Prospekt' Our June 2019 Baltic cruise stopped in St Petersburg, now off-limits due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During our walk along the Nevsky Prospekt boulevard, we stopped at the tourist shop with these nesting doll signs; it has since closed, likely due to the drop in tourism resulting from the Covid-19 Pandemic which started later that year. / Locale & Date: Nevsky Prospekt, 28 Jun 2019 / St Petersburg, Russia

'Knifepoint Precision' Over 16 years ago, on a cold winter day at the Tomb, I shot a series of photos with my old Nikon D200 at long range. I was lucky enough to capture this sharp image of the Old Guard sentinel as he precisely walked 21 steps with “knifepoint precision”. I can think of no other monument that exceeds the emotional power of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier @ Arlington National Cemetery. This photo, taken at long range as to not disturb the proceeding with the shutter click, was not a view that I could anticipate: It just happened and I was lucky. / Tomb of the Unknown Soldier / 9 February 2008 / Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA

“Peggy’s Rock” Sometimes, the best photos of people are taken when they are entranced by their surrounds – in this case my wife admiring the sea from a rock formation on the Pacific Ocean. “Skull Warrior” This life-size rendition of a warrior located outside the Wat Rong Khun Temple, with a skull necklace adorning its chest, is constructed with plaster and shiny glass. Themes include purity (white) and evil (skulls and snakes). The temple was built, yet remained unfinished, by Chalermchai Kositpipat. 'Little James Island' The Pacific Coast has many scenic beaches, with Rialto Beach being a “top 10” in my opinion. Little James Island on the right has a small forest with a bare tree on its top. 'Targeted Sedan' On my 2017 Dakotas venture, following a trip to the seldom-visited Sheep Mountain Table, I came up desolate Conata Basin Road, towards the Badlands national parklands. This old sedan popped into view on the right; it sure had seen it's share of target practice. Conata was a railroad town between 1907 & 1954; now it is only a ghost town. “Cape Meares Beacon” On my 3rd trip to the Oregon Coast, I sought out every lighthouse I could find. The Cape Meares Lighthouse (completed 1890), has an impressive cliff-side setting. Near Tillamook, it ceased operation in 1963.
