Gdansk

Gdansk sits on the Baltic coast in northern Poland. Gdansk is Poland’s principal seaport and lies at the mouth of the Motława River. Gdansk was formerly known as Danzig when part of Germany – but don’t call it that to the Poles!

This city has a complicated history, with battles for control going back to medieval times – and continuing through several World Wars and the Cold War period.

Gdansk, PolandGdansk has a dramatic history - events include being the site of the beginning of WW II and also hosting the Solidarity Movement - a labor uprising, led by Lech Walesa. Solidarity's efforts eventually resulted in the fall of Communism in Poland with ripple effects throughout the Warsaw Pact countries.
