The Republic of North Macedonia is a landlocked country, encompassing an area of just under 10,000 square miles, in Southeast Europe. Skopje is the capital of this small nation of nearly 2 million people. North Macedonia is a NATO member, joining in March 2020. It has applied to join the European Union (EU).
During the 20th century, Macedonia was ruled by Bulgaria over two separate periods, during World Wars I and II. After the conclusion of World War II in 1945, it was integrated into communist Yugoslavia led by Joseph Broz Tito. Macedonia remained linked to Yugoslavia until its exit to become an independent country in 1991. Macedonia became The Republic of North Macedonia in 2019 as a result of a long-running name/identity dispute with Greece.
In addition to my stay in the capital, Skopje, I spent time at Ohrid, abutting Lake Ohrid and made an excursion to the ruins of the ancient city of Stobi.
