The following photos were taken September 29 thru October 1, 2024. This was the half-way point on my circuitous route starting and ending in Warsaw, Poland.
Berlin, of course, was extensively destroyed during the latter stages of World War II, thru May of 1945. In the post-war divide of east and west Germany, as well as Berlin itself, the western side of the country, and and to a lesser extent, west Berlin itself, was largely rebuilt.
East Berlin was in stark contrast a drab set of buildings, incorporating Soviet-era designs. It was only after the fall of the infamous Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 and the subsequent reunification of Germany in 1990 did the eastern side of Berlin start the long and steady process of modern rebuilding.
I really only had one day in Berlin for photography, as the second day was spent in Brandenburg – the home of one of my ancestors. Fortunately, the weather was glorious and a good meal was had late in the afternoon @ Schnitzelei Mitte (and yes – I had the schnitzel).
